CUBBON'S TURN JAKS TO ACES

Mark Cubbon scored his first ever rally win in sensational style on Saturday as the Jaks Bar Asphalt Stages Rally came down to an afternoon shoot-out through the streets of Peel.

Driving a Mitsubishi Evo 7 with Eunice Cubbon, Mark started the day's ten stages just six seconds down on John Cope and Rob Fagg. The Subaru Impreza WRC pair went about extending that from the off at The Lhen in the north of the island despite overnight rain leaving slippery conditions.

They took ten seconds out of the Cubbon's, who admitted they had been too cautious after a sideways moment on only the third corner. In fact they surrendered second place to Steve Quine and Paul McCann (Vauxhall Astra).

Cope continued to dominate throughout the other morning tests at Tholt-y-Will and Druidale, moving the advantage up to 40 seconds with just one run over Druidale and the four Peel tests to come. However his superb drive came to an end when the Subaru slithered of the road on Druidale, clouting a wall and post and breaking the steering column.

The Cubbon's, having overhauled Quine once more, moved into a slender eight second advantage, with Donny Gill (Evo 2) third and trials ace Steve Colley (Evo 6) in fourth.

Gill though was also to crash out on the first run of the all-new Peel test, causing the cancellation of the test. Three tests left and eight ticks was still the gap at the front. Quine took one second back on the first of them and then three more on the penultimate to leave a last stage showdown in front of packed spectator areas.

All or nothing, maximum commitment to the end, and both crews set the same time to leave the winning margin at just four seconds after almost 80 miles of stages.

Colley and Liz Humphreys took superb third place 41 seconds behind Quine, with Kex Walker/Danni Matthews (BMW) fourth and reigning Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally Champions Richard Curphey/Andrew Holmes fifth in a Vauxhall Nova.
