COLLISTER HOPES FOR TRIUMPHANT EASTER RETURN

The longest standing local club rally, Manx Auto Sports’ Easter Stages, sponsored by Black Horse Finance, returns to its traditional Easter date for the first time in several years, and has attracted a good entry of 32 crews.

Last years winners Richard Curphey and Andrew Holmes, the reigning Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally champions, will lead the field into action tomorrow morning (Saturday) in their Vauxhall Nova, though it is likely to be the all-wheel drive cars that challenge for victory this time.

They are headed by George Collister and Janet Craine. The pair are returning to action for the first time since the incident on last November’s closed road event that all but destroyed their Mistubishi. George has subsequently completely re-built the car. He will therefore be hungry for success, and as a former winner starts as favourite for the ten stage event.

Chief opposition is likely to come from Mark and Eunice Cubbon, who will take their Evo 7 off-road for the first time. They come into the event fresh from a maiden rally win on last months Jaks Bar Stages, which put them to the top of the championship standings, with an advantage they’ll seek to extend.

Other turbo class cars include Donny Gill and Steve Gurney, their Evo 2 repaired after the Peel crash last month, and Dave Corris in an Escort Cosworth.

Behind, the two-wheel drive battle looks one to savour. Taking the challenge to Curphey should be Kex Walker and Graham Collister, both in BMW 325’s. Other former winners include Nigel Cannell (Vauxhall Astra) and Ian Corkill (Escort MkII), while Andrew Leece (Honda Civic), Matt Bettridge (Peugeot 205) and Ian Bailey (Astra) have all shown great off-road form in the past. Among the other entries of interest, the islands leading driver is swapping seats; Rob Watson is listed to co-drive for young Martyn Jones.

The rally will be fought out at two venues, with six stages in Conrhenny plantation off the Creg-na-baa back road, and four at Glion Gill, an all new stage, off the Brandywell road. Spectators are advised to head to Conrhenny as there is no spectator access to Glion Gill, which starts more than half a mile off the road.

  • If you’re reading on Thursday then a reminder that scrutineering and signing-on for competitors and officials for this weekend’s Black Horse Finance Easter Stages Rally takes place tonight. Eurocars’ Peel Road premises is the place to head from 6.30pm for both competitors scrutineering and marshals and timekeepers signing-on.

  • If you can help man the rally, then please pop along. Alternatively contact Steve Kimber, Chief Marshal on 413648 or Noel Kelly for timekeepers on 494660.

  • Any media covering the event should also sign-on at Eurocars tonight.

  • The presentation of awards for the event will take place at the Hydro Hotel, Douglas promenade on Saturday night, from around 8.30pm. It is free entry to all and the organisers would particularly like to invite everyone involved in running the event, in whatever capacity.

  • Spectators are advised to head to the Conrhenny stages, and avoid Glion Gill. There is no spectator access to the new stage, which starts more than half a mile off the Brandywell road. In addition there is no parking permitted on the track leading to the stage.

  • Registration for the Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally Championship is still open and you can register at signing-on for the event with Jess Collister. It is free so everyone may as well enter.

  • The rally will also be the opening round of the brand new Forest Experience Stage Rally Championship. It is hoped it will become the premier gravel title on the island, taking in the three off-road events (the Trade Distribution and Duke Stages are the others, subject to confirmation). There will be separate registration for this championship, again available at documentation. The championship stewards are messers Tony, Mark and David Higgins!
