CUBBON'S DOUBLE TOP

Husband and wife team Mark and Eunice Cubbon made it two wins from two rounds to extend their lead in the Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally Championship, claiming a comfortable victory on Saturday’s Black Horse Finance Easter Stages.

Driving a Mitsubishi Evo 7 for the first time on gravel, the pair were initially headed by George Collister and Janet Craine (Evo 3) on the opening two tests at Conrhenny plantation near Onchan.

Collister opened a five second lead despite an overshoot on the first of them that cost as much as ten seconds, while Cubbon was adapting to gravel and felt he was too relaxed.

Donny Gill/Steve Gurney (Evo 2) held third despite an overshoot themselves, two seconds up on the leading two-wheel drive, reigning champions Richard Curphey/Andrew Holmes (Nova). They too had been slightly delayed when the wipers failed.

While Cubbon matched Collister on the second run of the same stage, Gill lost around 40 seconds when a turbo hose came off.

The rally headed to a brand new venue off the Brandywell Road for the next two tests, and as it did the battle for the lead was ended when differential failure sidelined Collister after he’d just increased the advantage to 10 seconds with another fastest time.

Cubbon inherited a half a minute margin over Curphey which he extended throughout the day to complete a comfortable win.

Gill though was gradually moving back up the leaderboard, and eventually reclaimed second on stage 6 back at Conrhenny. However, with the place seemingly secure he then put the Mitsubishi off on the final test, dropping three minutes and falling back to fifth.

It allowed former winner Ian Corkill and daughter Rivka (MkII Escort) to take a very welcome podium finish for the first time in ten years.

Earlier in the day the Corkill’s had been headed by both Andrew Leece/Graham Fargher (Honda Civic) and Nigel Cannell/Nick Kaighin (Vauxhall Astra). Broken steering had ended Leece’s run while holding fourth place on stage 6. Cannell meanwhile missed out on the top three by just three seconds after gear selection problems on the startline of SS7.

Graham Collister/Anton Cashen (BMW 325) completed the top 6 on Graham’s 27th appearance on the event.
